Text: The Princess and the Pea
There once lived a prince who had a desire to marry. However, his wife should be a real princess. So he travelled all over the world to find one. He met many royal daughters. But there was always something that did not fit. So he returned home alone.
One evening a terrible thunderstorm came up and it rained cats and dogs. Then there was a knock at the castle gate. A princess was standing outside. But she didn’t look like one at all! Her hair, clothes and shoes were all soaked. But she said she was a real princess.
So she was invited to stay. The old queen had an idea. Secretly she took down the beds in the bedchamber and put a pea on the bedstead. Then she took twenty mattresses and put them over the pea. On top of the mattresses she put twenty down comforters. The sleeping chamber for the princess was ready.
The following morning the young woman was asked how she had slept.
„Oh, terribly bad!“ she replied, „I almost didn’t sleep a wink! What was in the bed, who knows! I’ve been lying on something hard so that I’m all brown and blue all over my body!“
They knew then that she really was a princess when she had felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty down comforters. Only a real princess could be that sensitive!
The prince was happy to have finally found a real princess and took her as his wife.
The pea went into the treasury, where it can still be seen today.
